Today microsoft announced that 60% of all Xbox 360 owners actually use the Xbox Live silver memberships that are bundled for free with Xbox 360 systems.

The 360′s online rate has exceeded Microsoft’s expectations so far, but they don’t expect it to continue forever. This is because The Xbox Live Silver service does not allow online gameplay, but does let players post achievements and download demos. You must buy a gold membership to play online.

boxartforphantasystarSega’s new upcoming game, Phantasy Star Universe, is going to have a new customizable room feature. The room is like your home inwhich you can invite friends over to chat when you are online. The room would be saved online so when you logoff players can continue to visit it.

Players can change the design of their room by purchasing a “remodeling ticket” and selecting from a ton of predefined patterns. The game will feature design shops in which the players can buy items for their room, or give objects to other players. Players who want to make a little profit in the game, can turn their rooms into shops.

The game features a planetary system, which is made up of the Guardian Colony, Parum, Neudaiz, and the Moatoob. Each location will specialize in different types of items. For example, the Guardian Colony will be the only place you can buy items for your rooms, and their base will serve as the central mission control where you recieve missions in story mode. Parum will sell gear for Hunters and Rangers, Neudaiz sells stuff for Newman species, and also will supply weapons and accessories for enhancing Technique for Force characters. While the Moatoob supplies vehicles and military equipment.

Phantasy Star Universe is is set to launch on Augest 31 in japan for the PlayStation 2 which is to be priced at around $61. The PC and Xbox 360 editions’ launch date and price are not known yet.

Sony Ditches the UMD format

Sony has announced that they will be discontinuing their PSP UMD format that is used for movies. Walmart and Bestbuy and Target have and successfully removed all UMD movies off their shelfs. Why are stores doing this? Because the UMD format “failed” because of third party converter programs that allow owners of a PSP convert their videos to PSP format. Sony is hurting themselves for not putting locking technology on the sticks (I predict sony will do just that [based on their past history of putting drm technology on hardware they have made]).

Sony announced the forthcoming release of a pair of Memory Stick Entertainment Packs. The packages will come in 1GB and 2GB Memory Stick Duos for about $60 and $100–the standard retail price for both items. The movies play in a 240×320-pixel resolution, way lower than the 480×272-pixel resolution PSPs are advertised for.  Since Purchasers of the packs will be able to copy only one of four films that are from a DVD onto their new memory sticks–the others will then be locked and not accessible unless someone cracks it.

So why am I making a big deal about this? Cause it’s a total ripoff to buy the pack. And it also puts sony in the position to start putting DRM schemes on the Media Sticks becuase sony has no means of controlling movies or other files that are copied on the stick.

EA does Challenge Everything

Even burger contests. EA’s Redwood City headquarters has been gobbling up hamburgers and for the third year in a row EA won the Prince of Wales Pub habanero-burger eating contest.

This Pub challenges local businesses to consume as many spicy burgers as they can in a week.

There is no limit to the amount of employees that can compete. Which gives EA a very good advantage over other companies. The winners get an “I Survived the Habanero Burger” bumper sticker to put on their car (how cheesy) and heartburn.

Let’s see if EA can challenge that.

New Splinter Cell Game

Ubisoft is making a new Splinter Cell game. YAY! Unforunatly this time you aren’t the good guy. Perhaps. The game starts out with Mr. Fisher recieving a phone call that his daughter is dead.

On hearing this, Ubisoft says that, he “snaps”. Soon after he starts robbing banks. And alot of them. Then he gets captured and goes to jail. He is fired from Third Echolean. Most of this is learned from the website:
http://www.bewaresamfisher.com/
which ubisoft registared the domain about 2 weeks ago. Also Sam Fisher shaves his hair (so basically he is bald). Is there a secret plot to this? (Probably, because heck it’s Tom Clancy, what would you expect?). This game could be the darkest Splinter Cell ever.

We will keep ya posted.
